Viewing is only the beginning

Picturium starts as a convenient image viewer for macOS, but it does more than open a picture. Drag a file into the window, choose one with the Open button, or open it directly from Finder. When you need to browse a larger collection, add one or more folders at once.

Images from those folders appear as thumbnails in the sidebar. Sort them by name, modification date, creation date, size, or kind, or filter the list down to GIFs. Finding an animation, choosing source material, and moving between nearby images no longer requires repeated trips through Finder and a pile of separate windows. Still images and GIFs share the same browsing flow, with direct play and pause controls whenever an animation appears.

The more interesting part begins after you find an image: you can continue working with it immediately instead of moving a simple idea into a much heavier editor.

Crop a GIF and keep it moving

Plenty of tools can crop an image, but some reduce a GIF to a single frame in the process. Picturium preserves the complete animation. Draw the area you want to keep and the picture becomes smaller while its frame count and per-frame timing stay intact.

That makes it useful for creating chat reactions, focusing attention on one part of a screen recording, or removing empty space around an animation. There is no need to split the GIF into frames, crop every image, and assemble it again. The action feels like cropping an ordinary picture, but the result is still a normally playing GIF.

Stack images—and stack animations too

Stacking turns an image from a finished result into a canvas for a new combination. Drag media from the thumbnail sidebar or Finder, or select several images at once. Every addition becomes its own layer, with independent position, rotation, and scale.

Still-image stacking is handy for quick collages, stickers, and corner badges. Put a GIF over a still background and an otherwise static scene gains a moving point of focus. More unusually, Picturium supports GIF-on-GIF stacking: the base and every animated layer continue playing at their own pace instead of freezing one animation into a single frame.

Even GIFs with different speeds and frame counts can therefore share one result. As they move independently on the canvas, their combination keeps producing new moments. A few unrelated source files can become a new reaction image, animated collage, or tiny piece of motion simply by changing their placement, size, and angle.

Whenever a composition contains animation, save or export it as a GIF to keep the motion.

Annotation, text, and mosaic tools stay close by

Editing mode also provides rectangles, ellipses, lines, arrows, and a freehand pen for highlighting a screenshot, adding an explanation, or simply drawing over an image. Text supports font and size controls. When a face, account name, ID number, or other private detail needs to be hidden, paint over it with the mosaic tool.

Elements are not permanently fixed the moment they are added. Select each one independently to move, rotate, or resize it, with undo and redo available throughout. The same tools work for a carefully prepared instructional image or a quick, playful reply to a friend.

Move from browsing to making without losing the idea

Putting these features together is not about turning an image viewer into a huge professional suite. It is about shortening the distance between seeing useful source material and making something from it. Find the right picture while browsing a folder and crop it immediately. Notice a funny moment inside a GIF and keep that moving fragment. Wonder what two animations would look like together and drag them onto the same canvas to find out.

When the result is ready, choose Save to replace the original or Export to create a new file and leave the source untouched. Saving over a file usually cannot be undone, so exporting a copy first is the safer choice for anything important or irreplaceable.
